Lubricants, Leak Detectors & Penetrants

A lubricant is a substance introduced to reduce friction between surfaces in mutual contact, which ultimately reduces the heat generated when the surfaces move. It may also have the function of transmitting forces, transporting foreign particles, or heating or cooling the surfaces. The property of reducing friction is known as lubricity.

Leak detection fluid is a product people can use to check for leaks in a pressurized system. Plumbers and other professionals who work with such systems commonly utilize products like this for system checks, and people can also keep a bottle around the home if they have concerns about leaks.

Penetrants are used in the inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.
