Acorn Nuts & Cap Nuts
Acorn nuts, also known as cap nuts or dome nuts, are a type of fastener used to secure bolts and screws. They get their name because their shape resembles that of an acorn, with a domed top and a slightly pointed end.
Acorn nuts are designed to cover and protect the exposed end of a bolt or screw, providing a finished appearance and reducing the risk of injury from sharp edges. They are typically used in applications where aesthetics are important, such as in furniture, automotive parts, and decorative hardware.
These nuts are usually made of metal, such as steel, stainless steel, or brass, although plastic versions are also available for certain applications. They are often threaded internally to match the thread of the bolt or screw they are used with, allowing them to be screwed onto the fastener.
Low crown (standard) steel cap nuts are usually manufactured in two pieces, a hex nut and an acorn-shaped top, with a zinc die cast to form the finished nut. Stainless steel cap nuts are similar in design to the steel nut but made from an austenitic stainless alloy, and can be a one or two-piece style. Additional styles of acorn nuts include high crown and self-locking.
It's worth noting that acorn nuts are different from regular hex nuts, which have flat tops and six-sided bodies. The dome shape of acorn nuts provides a more streamlined and visually appealing appearance.

There are standards governing the manufacture of acorn nuts. One is Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Standard J483, High and Low Crown (Blind, Acorn) Hex Nuts. Another is Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) 1587, Hexagon Domed Cap Nuts.
