Annular Cutters

An annular cutter, also known as a core drill or slugger cutter, is a specialized cutting tool used in metalworking and machining applications. It is designed to create precise and clean holes in various types of metal.

The annular cutter consists of a cylindrical, hollow body with a series of cutting teeth around its circumference. These teeth are usually made from high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide materials, which are capable of cutting through metal efficiently. The cutter typically has a pilot pin at its center to guide and stabilize the cutting process.

To use an annular cutter, it is inserted into a compatible magnetic drilling machine or an annular cutting machine. The cutter is secured in place, and the machine provides rotational power and downward pressure to the cutter. As the cutter rotates, the teeth cut into the metal, removing a cylindrical slug or core from the workpiece.

Annular cutters offer several advantages over traditional twist drills. They create holes with greater precision, accuracy, and speed. The cutting action is more efficient since the cutter only removes the material around the circumference of the hole, leaving behind a solid core or slug. This reduces the amount of waste generated and makes it easier to handle and dispose of the metal shavings.

Annular cutters are commonly used in industries such as construction, metal fabrication, automotive, and manufacturing. They are suitable for drilling holes in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and other metals. The holes created by annular cutters are often used for various applications, such as pipe and conduit installation, structural connections, and component assembly.

It's worth noting that while annular cutters are primarily used for metalworking, there are also specialized versions available for cutting other materials like wood and plastics. These cutters may have different tooth geometries and coatings to optimize their performance in specific materials.

Choosing an Annular Cutter

M2 High Speed Steel Annular Cutters

The high tungsten content of these standard core cutters offers abrasion resistance that results in durability and long tool life. These all-purpose core drills are suitable for cutting mild and structural steel, aluminum and low BHN stainless steel. M2 HSS annular cutters are available in diameters from 7/16" to 2-3/8" and in either 1" or 2" lengths.

M35 Cobalt Annular Cutters

Similar to M2 cutters, M35 core drills have 6% cobalt added to the steel alloy they are manufactured from as well as a gold finish. These additions deliver increased heat resistance which produces increased hardness that enables the drill to tackle tough jobs. M35 annular cutters are available in diameters from 7/16" to 2-1/16" and lengths of either 1" or 2".

M42 Super Cobalt Annular Cutters

Molybdenum-chromium vanadium tungsten alloy with 8% cobalt offers superior red-hot hardness over conventional high speed steel, making these core drills suitable for drilling even the most difficult materials, including structural steel, stainless steel and cast iron without sacrificing speed or tool longevity. Find diameters ranging from 7/16" to 2-3/8" in lengths of either 1" or 2".
