Hex Keys & Misc.

Hex wrenches, also known as hex keys, Allen keys or L-wrenches, are used to fasten screws and bolts that have an internal-wrenching hexagon socket drive such as set screws. The tool is L-shaped and either end can be used to adjust the tightness of a screw or bolt, which allows the user to change the reach or the torque simply by reversing the end used. Hex key wrenches with a T-handle offer additional turning power along with a more comfortable grip.

Hex Wrench and Torx Wrench Features

A hexagonal key is hexagonal in shape. A torx key, on the other hand, has a 6-point star-shaped pattern, earning it the common name of star wrench. The star design allows for higher torque than the standard hexagonal shape. Hex keys and torx keys are both sold in modified form with a pin in the center of the hex or star end that is suitable for the removal of temper proof security screws. Other available options include long or short arm lengths, fold-up wrench sets and ball point keys.

Hex keys and torx keys are measured across the flats, which means that the distance from one side across to the other parallel side is measured. Available in standard inch or metric sizes, hex wrenches are simple, small, lightweight and because they can be affordably produced, are often included along with kitted parts in products that must be assembled by the end-user.
