What are jam nuts used for?
Jam nuts are frequently used in tight spaces. However, standard hex nuts can be used to “jam” another nut into place, preventing loosening (especially in applications subject to vibration) and creating a low profile.
How do you use a jam nut with a standard nut?
In some applications, a standard jam nut can be placed alongside another nut to “jam” the latter nut into place. This is done by tightening the other nut against the jam nut, locking the threads.
What is the difference between a jam nut and a standard hex nut?
Jam nuts are around 2/3 the thickness of a standard hex nuts. Similarly, heavy hex jam nuts are around 2/3 the thickness of a standard heavy hex nut.

Jam nuts are available in both metric and imperial sizing. Diameter-thread sizes range from 1/4”-20 to 2-1/2”-12 or M2-0.40 to M12-1.00.
