Frequently Asked Questions About Castle Hex Nuts and Slotted Hex Nuts

What are slotted hex nuts used for?

They are commonly used in applications that face above average vibration, such as heavy machinery and industrial equipment, automotive steering and suspension parts, and parts used in marine or military settings.

What’s the difference between a slotted hex nut and a castle nut?

The slots on castle hex nuts are cut into cylindrical portions that are equal in length to the slot depth and slightly smaller in diameter than the hex width. Both styles are interchangeable.

How does a slotted hex nut work with a cotter pin?

After tightening the nut, a cotter pin is inserted through one of the slots and through the cross-hole. Along with a drilled fastener, this creates a locking mechanism that prevents loosening and rotation.

What sizes do slotted hex nuts come in?

Diameter-thread sizes range from #10-24 to 2”-12.

What materials and finishes do slotted hex nuts come in?

AFT offers slotted hex nuts in steel, stainless steel, or brass. They are available in a plain finish, or in zinc Cr+3 or zinc yellow for additional corrosion resistance.
