What grades are tap bolts available in?
Tap bolts are available in grades 2, 5, and 8.
- Grade 2 tap bolts are a low carbon, hex head bolt with a machined point and fully threaded, made from AISI 1006-1025 or equivalent steel.
- Grade 5 tap bolts are a fully threaded hex bolt that are heat treated and made from AISI 1541 or equivalent medium carbon steel, or 4037 modified steel (alloy).
- Grade 8 tap bolts are heat treated and made from medium carbon alloy.
How do I choose the right tap bolt?
- Grade 2 tap bolts are typically used in full length threaded drilled or tapped holes instead of a stud or nut.
- If you’re looking specifically for automotive applications, such as to mount motors to machinery, Grade 5 may be the best fit.
- For automotive or fleet applications where greater tensile strength is needed, Grade 8 is what is needed.
- Stainless steel tap bolts are used when the application is an environment corrosive to carbon steel.
Do tap bolts require a nut?
Not always, one of the primary benefits of a tap bolt is that they do not require a nut in most cases. However, if you are fastening through unthreaded materials or if the assembly doesn’t include a tapped hole, a nut may be necessary.
