What are security nuts used for?

Security nuts are commonly used in applications that are subject to significant exposure and/or need extra protection, such as public infrastructure, industrial equipment, and high-value possessions. 

What are the different types of security nuts? 

The two primary types of security nuts are tamperproof spanner nuts and tamperproof breakaway nuts. Tamperproof spanner nuts are removable security nuts, whereas tamperproof breakaway nuts are non-removable (the hex nut will break away when the nut is tightened, leaving only the tamper-resistant conical portion). 

How are security nuts removed?

Security nuts (spanner nuts, breakaway nuts are non-removable) are removed with a specialty spanner nut bit or complete spanner nut driver. 

What sizes do security nuts come in? 

Diameter-thread sizes range from #10-24 to 3/8”-16. 

What materials and finishes do security nuts come in? 

AFT offers security nuts made of both alloy and aluminum, and in either a plain or zinc finish for extra corrosion resistance. Spanner nuts specifically are non-ferrous and rust-resistant.
